History of the PMC
The Pan Mass Challenge was
founded in 1980 by Billy Starr with 36 riders and raised $10,200 for the
Jimmy Fund. The traditional ride is a 196-mile, two day event starting
in Sturbridge and finishing the first day at the Mass Maritime Academy
in Bourne, a total of 112-miles. The final leg of the event travels an
additional 84-miles between Bourne and Provincetown.
Last August a group of more than 5000 cyclists riding in the 29th annual
PMC raised a staggering $35 million. This brings the PMC's 29-year Jimmy
Fund contribution to more than $239 million for lifesaving cancer
care and research at Dana-Farber.
The PMC is the single largest contributor to the Jimmy Fund, generating
nearly 50 percent of its annual revenue. The PMC, in partnership with
the Boston Red Sox, raises more money than any other athletic
fundraising event in the country. It is also the most cost efficient
with 100% of each dollar raised going directly to the Jimmy
Fund.
This August 1st and 2nd, more than 5,000 cyclists will again travel six
different routes, logging between 89 and 192 miles over one or two days,
through 46 scenic Massachusetts towns from Sturbridge and Wellesley to
Bourne and Provincetown. |
